HyTown’s last dragstrip…
Hyannis – The cars line up revving their engines at South and Sea Street…
Red and then green!
They’re off!
Traveling at speeds up to 55mph or more, through a densely populated neighborhood, a school zone — in fact two schools right next to each other– a busy church (where the Kennedys attended for crying-out-loud…), a home for young mothers with infants, the rear of another school, the American Red Cross, the Cape Cod Child Development program, a library parking lot, and a “town hall!” (filled with more than three blind mice, but I digress…)
Nobody was injured or killed in tonight’s accident at High School Road and South Street, but that particular intersection has claimed lives in the past.
Since the 1970s I have witnessed too many accidents to count at High School Road and South Street.
I have seen little uniformed Catholic girls and boys run for cover when lead-footed idiots nearly sent them to Kingdom Come as they stood on one of the dangerous crosswalks there…
It’s the only school zone in town with a dragstrip running through it.
And why it doesn’t have traffic lights astounds me… and boggles the mind when you consider all the other stupid traffic lights in other parts.
It’s one set of traffic lights after another in the rest of HyTown… Seems like every five feet or so in some parts…
So why are there no traffic lights at this dangerous intersection smack dab in the middle of a busy school zone?
Is it really going to take some little kid being splattered all over the pavement to have the town finally wake up?
Mark my words, there has been serious injuries and death there in the past, and if something’s not done there will be more needless bloodshed in the future. It’s not “if,” but “when…”
At least there’s a good chance of a priest being nearby to administer Last Rites…
In other news:
We’ve reached a point during “the dead” of winter where some HyTown folks choose to sit around and drink all day…
For many it’s a cold depressing time of year, which means more cold depressed drunks…
Police have their hands full with people acting out… hooking and jabbing… and domestic assaults seem high this time of year…
As was the case yesterday when a full grown man assaulted his sister.
His sister had injuries and police wanted to have a word with the him.
In fact, police were actively searching when he walked right through the front door of police headquarters with his own “side of the story…”
Police weighed the evidence and both sides of the story…
… and based on the evidence and injuries, Officer Dave Foley made the call when he said “I need you to come out back with me.”
The man was taken into custody and booked on Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon.
Just one of many similar arrests for members of the BPD this time of year…
