INSIDE JOB: Woman arrested for felony shoplifting… allegedly had extra help at checkout counter…
HYANNIS – At about 5:12PM, Barnstable Patrolman Dan Ruth was dispatched to Kmart to assist store detectives with an uncooperative shoplifter. At that time, the female was said to have stolen about $600 in store merchandise and loss prevention personnel were in the process of making contact with her outside in front of the store… they were reportedly trying to get her to go back into the store so they could continue to investigate the alleged larceny.
Investigators later learned that about $1000 or more in store merchandise was stolen. And at the time of this report the numbers were still rising… (Exact amounts have not been officially released.)
According to sources, it is believed the suspect had help from at least one store employee on duty during the alleged crime. Another female working the checkout counter was allegedly pretending to scan items before placing them into the suspect’s shopping bags.
Investigators are considering the possibility the larceny scam may have been going on for some time. Store detectives are continuing to investigate and reportedly have today’s crime well documented with surveillance footage.
About an hour and a half after the initial call, Patrolman Ruth exited the building with the lead suspect, placing her in handcuffs before stuffing her into the back seat of a Barnstable Police squad car.
The store employee suspected of being an accomplice remained inside the building with loss prevention. Her identity has not yet been disclosed. The investigation was still active at the time of this report.
Roxann Bailey, age 39, of Hyannis was charged with 2 counts of felony “Larceny Over…”
Bailey is scheduled to be arraigned later this morning in Barnstable District Court.
Police are actively investigating and HN will provide updates as they become available. There are some early, albeit unofficial, indications which suggest there may be far more to this alleged caper.
Stay tuned.
[All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law…]
