Intoxicated Young Man Falls from Second-Story Window in Failed Escape Bid During Brief Hyannis Standoff [HN Photos]
HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS — A reportedly highly intoxicated young man plunged from a second-story window into a bush early Tuesday morning while trying to evade Barnstable police, ending a tense confrontation that began with reports of violent threats inside a local home.
Barnstable Police responded to the residence around 12:30 a.m. after receiving calls about a young man allegedly making violent threats against others inside and, at one point, threatening to harm himself. The first officers on scene quickly requested backup when the man, still inside the home, refused to cooperate.
In an apparent escape attempt, the young man climbed out a second-story window but then climbed back inside, according to radio transmissions. That pause allowed more units to converge: a plainclothes tandem team cleared a nearby traffic stop and raced in from several blocks away, joining additional marked cruisers. A Hyannis Fire Department ambulance staged just steps from the house as officers surrounded the property.
Hyannis News arrived as the situation intensified and took a position behind the ambulance’s front bumper, camera leveled, with paramedics watching from inside their vehicle. Suddenly the young man emerged from the window a second time. With officers below, he lost his footing and fell from the second story, landing in a large bush.
Officers moved in immediately, checking him for weapons before securing him in handcuffs so medics could take over. The young man did not appear seriously injured physically and continued arguing and struggling as responders strapped him to a stretcher. He was transported to Cape Cod Hospital for a mental health evaluation, with at least two Barnstable officers following the ambulance as a precaution.
Back at the scene, officers spoke with a woman who appeared shaken by the ordeal. No further details will be released at this time…
