*** LISTEN *** PUPILS KEPT INDOORS AT FOUR BARNSTABLE SCHOOLS AFTER MAN REPORTEDLY STRUCK SOMEONE WITH FIREARM NEAR CAMPUS
HYANNIS – [HN NOTES] – A concerned parent of a student who attends Barnstable Public Schools reached out to HN regarding a message (see above screenshot) received from the Superintendent of Barnstable Public Schools, yesterday afternoon, around 1:50 p.m. The message vaguely mentions police responding to a “community-based situation” in the vicinity of several schools that had children in attendance.
The message was addressed “Dear Barnstable Public Schools Families,” and continues as follows:
“Around mid-day today [Friday, March 24, 2023], Barnstable Police notified the school department that they were responding to a community-based situation in the vicinity of Barnstable Intermediate School and Barnstable High School. There was no direct threat or safety concern at our schools in this area of Hyannis, however, due to an abundance of caution, Barnstable High School, Barnstable Intermediate School, Hyannis West Elementary School, and the Enoch Cobb Early Learning Center keep everyone inside the school buildings, with normal school operations occurring.
After taking all appropriate actions, the Barnstable Police Department have declared the situation to be clear and have reassured us that we can proceed with dismissal, as expected, and our after school activities can proceed safely. Outdoor activities were determined to be safe as well.
To provide reassurance, BPD officers will be present at these schools for dismissal.”
HN pulled up the following police radio transmissions regarding a commotion close to the schools mentioned, at a nearby apartment building yesterday, around midday.
Police had responded to the Founders Courts apartments at 979 Falmouth Road (RTE 28) for a report of person being “hit” with some kind of firearm. The suspect with the firearm reportedly fled the scene on foot. The Founders Courts apartments directly abut the ball fields next to the Barnstable Intermediate School and Barnstable High School.
As you will hear in the following HN Video, a description of a white male dressed in black was put out to all police officers in the area.
Hyannis Rescue also responded to Founders Court, apparently for some type of unspecified wounds.
A sergeant on scene ordered additional officers to both the Barnstable Intermediate School and Barnstable High School in order to make their presence known during dismissal.
LATEST UPDATE: According to Barnstable Police sources, the suspect, or “Community-Based Situation,” was still at large as of 5 a.m. this morning – 3/25/2023.
