FROM THE OVERNIGHT: Barnstable Police investigate fiery rollover crash… driver cited for leaving scene…
MARSTONS MILLS – At around 1:30 a.m. this morning – Sunday, 10-17-2021 – Barnstable Police and COMM Firefighters arrived on the scene of a fiery rollover crash into a utility pole…
… and at first, first responders were uncertain whether there was anyone still trapped inside or not. But upon further investigation, officials learned the driver (the sole occupant) had already left the scene. The Honda Civic had been traveling too fast to navigate the turn, hitting a traffic island and landing on the corner of Route 28 and Main Street, according to police sources.
According to Sergeant Nathan St. Onge of the Barnstable Police Department, investigating officers were able to determine that the driver had been picked up by a random motorist and given a ride to his parents house in Mashpee. (Eventually, the driver’s random ride home arrived back at the fiery scene, helping to clue officials in on missing pieces of the puzzle.)
The driver, a 27-year-old from Mashpee, was surprisingly uninjured. Police met up with the driver in his neighborhood, right as his parent were giving him a ride back to the scene.
The driver was not intoxicated and is believed to have freaked out because he didn’t have a driver’s license. Police were relieved he had not been injured but it still did not excuse him from leaving the scene. The young man was issue a citation for Unlicensed Operation, Negligent Operation, and Leaving the Scene…
NOTE: HN has been working a special assignment and was unable to attend this morning’s crash scene.
