MASHPEE – Two teens, a 16-year-old female and a 19-year-old male, were airlifted to off-Cape trauma centers in separate Medflight helicopters, both described as being in priority one condition from multi-system trauma after their vehicle slammed into a large boulder at the end of Echo Road at about 8:30 p.m. last evening.
The extreme impact brought the engine compartment into the passenger compartment, trapping both teens underneath the dashboard, according to Chief Thomas Rullo of the Mashpee Fire Department.
According to radio transmissions, the extrication of the two teens was lengthy, involving additional firefighters arriving on scene to assist the initial rescue units and police. Both patients were said to have been conscious prior to being transported to the landing zone.
According to radio transmissions, the caller who reported the crash described the vehicle as traveling about 50 miles per hour prior to striking the large boulder, which was actually moved a small distance from the acute force, according to sources on scene.
It’s uncertain what led up to the crash and a worried friend who heard about the tragedy, approached HN on Echo Road, extremely concerned about both individuals.
The current condition of both patients is unknown and no further details were available at the time of this report.
The cause of the crash is being investigated by the Mashpee Police Department.
