DENNIS, MASSACHUSETTS — What began as every parent’s nightmare ended in tears of pure relief early Friday morning.

Shortly before 11 p.m. Thursday, Dennis Police learned an 8-year-old boy was missing from a home near Old Bass River Road and Bob Crowell Road. The child was described as roughly 4 feet 6 inches tall, autistic, and non-verbal. The situation was immediately classified as high-risk.

When Hyannis News arrived, the boy’s father was visibly distraught, arguing with officers a short distance from the residence. He was later taken into protective custody, according to sources and radio traffic.

Within minutes the Barnstable County Technical Search and Rescue Team was activated. Firefighters and specialized resources from departments across Cape Cod poured into the area. A staging post was set up in the parking lot of the former DPW facility at 30 Bob Crowell Road. ATVs roared to life, drones lifted into the night sky, and teams fanned out through neighborhood streets, backyards, ball fields, boat docks, and every path that led toward water—the greatest fear on every responder’s mind.

Massachusetts State Police Air Wing was requested, but poor weather initially grounded the helicopter. Undeterred, local crews kept drones aloft and continued the ground search.

Nearly two hours in, the boy’s mother arrived at a nearby ball field where HN was also searching. She explained that her son had never wandered before, would not answer to his name, and was “pretty fast.” Together with HN, we searched the dark ball fields and checked possible hiding places, including portable restrooms, calling out the familiar phrases that might draw a response from her non-verbal child. She lived across town; the father lived near the fields the boy knew. The night felt endless.

Then, at 1:44 a.m., the radio crackled with the words everyone had been praying to hear: the boy had been located nearly two miles away, safe and sound, asleep on his grandmother’s couch.

A short time later the mother gave HN a big hug, tears streaming down her face—tears of exhaustion, fear finally released, and overwhelming gratitude for a child with special needs who was now safe and sound.

Happy endings are rare in this work. This one ranks among the best.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: I also need to mention how impressive and heartwarming it was to see neighbors in that neighborhood leaving their homes with flashlights in the middle of the night, checking boat paths, streets, and wooded areas for the missing child! Simply amazing! It’s all about teamwork!!!
