NOT HER FIRST RODEO: 73-year-old drunk driving suspect reportedly told officer about her OUI arrest 2 years prior…
HYANNIS – According to the police report, Barnstable Police Patrolman Michael Lima observed the Subaru make a very aggressive “jagged” turn out of the Tiki Port parking lot onto Route 132, Sunday morning, at about 1:27 am.
Patrolman Lima then reportedly observed the Subaru swerving into south and northbound lanes as it traveled along Route 132 toward the airport rotary, where it allegedly didn’t yield for other vehicles.
The Subaru was subsequently pulled over and stopped next to the airport on Route 28.
The officer spoke with the 73-year-old driver and reportedly could smell alcohol on her breath as she told him she was heading home to Harwich.
When asked, the driver reportedly admitted to having several Sex on the Beaches at Tiki Port and that she knew she shouldn’t have driven.
The driver went on to tell police, “I called my ex-boyfriend for a ride, but he told me he was not going to pick me up. The hotels here do not rent to locals so that was not an option. I could have gotten a ride from this man at the bar, but I did not know him [too] well.’
When asked how far she went in school, she told the officer she was a retired teacher and that she also was a college professor. According the report, the suspect only managed to recite the alphabet from A to L before stopping and telling the officer she couldn’t remember the rest. When given a second chance, she had even more trouble with the alphabet and apologized for drinking and driving. She then reportedly admitted to being arrested for OUI 2 years prior.
During field sobriety testing, the suspect was reportedly so drunk she almost fell over a few times when the officer was just giving instructions. Officer Lima decided to terminated the FSTs for her safety…
A portable Breathalyzer test showed a reading of .12% blood alcohol content (0.08% or higher, is considered legally impaired in the U.S ).
The suspect was arrested and booked at BPD Headquarters, where breathalyzer results were 0.11%…
The 73-year-old driver reportedly told the arresting officer, “I was home, depressed and lonely. I just wanted some company. I left my house sometime after 10 and went to Tiki Port. I don’t remember my first drink but my last drink was right at 1AM. I knew I shouldn’t have drove.”
Marilyn Welsh, age 73, of Harwich, had her license suspended on the spot and was charged with Operating Under the Influence – 2nd Offense, Marked Lanes Violation, and Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle.
