NOTEWORTHY K-9 ACTIVITY – Neko sniffs out suspect who fled serious car crash…
PLYMOUTH – There was evidence the driver who fled was injured and the first troopers on scene requested K-9 assistance… that’s when Neko showed up and got the job done.
On Tuesday, November 22, at about 11:30PM, Massachusetts State Troopers from the Bourne Barracks rushed to a report of a single car crash into the woods along Route 3.
A severely damaged vehicle was located in a wooded area, but the operator was nowhere to be found. Troopers became even more concerned when they noticed obvious signs the driver was injured.
HN was listening and troopers immediately requested a K-9 unit. Trooper Dan Purtell and his K-9 partner Neko arrived and quickly investigated around the vehicle.
Neko picked up a scent and led his handler across southbound highway lanes.
Neko and Trooper Purtell then tracked about a mile on a nearby dirt path which ran along the side of Route 3 and eventually out to a main thoroughfare.
Neko then led Trooper Purtell toward a 24-hour gas station where a trooper who was holding the perimeter joined the K-9 team in order to search the gas station.
While inside, troopers suddenly heard a door slam shut behind the station.
The alert staties then quickly checked out back and Neko showed his handler a “proximity alert.” Hot on the trail, Neko immediately yanked Trooper Purtell down the driveway to a nearby shopping plaza parking lot. It was there Trooper Mastera glanced ahead of the K-9 team and observed a man crouching behind a parked vehicle.
The suspect initially tried to run but loud commands from the K-9 team made him think twice. The fleeing motorist stopped and was interviewed by troopers. EMS arrived and treated the operator for his injuries.
According to Massachusetts State Police statement, the operator was eventually charged with the crime of leaving the scene of a crash with property damaged. The operator was also charged with having an open container of alcohol inside the vehicle.
HN NOTE: Great job Neko! And troopers as well, of course…
