Owner claims car was stolen, someone crashed it, airbags deployed, and thief returned it to its previous parking space with keys still in it…
Hyannis – A car owner called Barnstable Police this morning claiming that someone had stolen his vehicle during the overnight. He also claimed the thief got in an accident, seriously damaged his vehicle and then returned his vehicle to its exact parking space outside his room at the International Inn.
Police quickly dispatched someone who wasn’t born yesterday.
Patrolman Keith Sexton arrived, examined the damage, examined the owner, listened to the story…
… he already knew he was being fed a load of bull.
Sexton intently and clearly made sure the reporting party knew it was a felony to make a false stolen vehicle report.
Even though the car owner still showed signs of being intoxicated from the night before… that combined with Sexton pointing out what appeared to be recent airbag burns on his face… despite all that, it didn’t take long for the car owner to smarten up and change his story.
The brief amount of time it took the car owner to come clean probably saved him from a trip to the pokey with felony charges.
The next question didn’t go as smoothly.
Sexton needed to know what the car owner hit and where exactly the hit and run accident occurred.
The owner/driver claimed he couldn’t remember… but did manage to vaguely point in a general direction…
Sexton did find another recent hit and run accident just a couple blocks away at the intersection of Sea Street and South Street.
Although that was also a hit and run accident with property damage, it turned out to be a separate incident, with a pickup truck being the suspect vehicle.
The owner/driver who initially attempted to make a fraudulent and false report to police had to pay to have his damaged vehicle towed from the International Inn. If there is any justice he will, at the very least, have to pay for the damages to his own car… as well a the property he may have also damaged…
… which still remains unknown.
