PHOTO DUMP: HyTown stills and news briefs…
Author’s note: The photos on this page show how busy our first responders have been over the past several days. Normally, some of these incidents would be given more coverage, but because Hyannis News was engaged in breaking the recent Kennedy Compound story, these images were held back. I put these images of routine calls out there so the public is aware of just how busy our local police officers and firefighters actually are on a daily basis. Our community is very fortunate to have so many excellent committed first responders.
Top photo: Police received a couple of calls for unresponsive individuals on the ground inside of cemeteries this week. The above still was taken Wednesday in the Oak Neck Cemetery. A concerned motorist noticed the man on the ground near some graves and thought the worst. A patrolman arrived in the pouring rain and managed to wake the man, help him up, and give him a ride back into town.
In the following photo, a concerned citizen called about an unresponsive individual who was motionless on the ground inside the Saint Patrick’s Cemetery on Barnstable Road. Again, a patrolman quickly made his way to the scene and was able to confirm the man was still alive and not in need of emergency medical treatment. Alcohol and heat caused the man to become tired and take a nap. The officer was satisfied the man was just hung over and sent him off in the direction of the local homeless shelter.
Dealing with calls related to people on the ground, either passed out, or otherwise engaged in behavior which alarms the public, is a daily routine call for first responders in the downtown Hyannis area.
Above photo: HYANNIS – Police and rescue responded to the intersection of Route 132 and Independence Drive this afternoon for a bicyclist struck by a motor vehicle. According to sources, the bicyclist is very lucky he was not harmed more than he actually was. The bicyclist was treated for injuries to his elbow and did not want to be transported to CCH.
Above photo: HYANNIS – A patrolman responded to Sears Automotive when someone found some hypodermic needles. Patrol Officers routinely respond to safely remove needles which could still contain dangerous drugs or be infected with diseases.
Above photo: MARSTONS MILLS – A collision brought down a telephone pole and caused one car to roll over onto its roof at the intersection of Route 149 and Calvin Hamblin Road Wednesday morning at about 8:00am. According to sources, the silver Infinity, seen off in the distance, may have taken the corner too wide. Both drivers refused further treatment after being evaluated for non-life-threatening injuries. Nstar had to cut power before the scene was cleaned up. Route 149 needed to be closed until repairs were made. (This photo was sent in by a HN reader. Please feel free to contribute news photos by sending them to rjbastille@yahoo.com. Above photos: HYANNIS – A woman had to be transported to CCH at about 9:00pm on Tuesday evening after a two car collision at the intersection of Bearses Way and Pitchers Way. The accident drew a rapid response after first responders learned of injuries, one possibly involving a small child. The child turned out to be okay. The older woman was transported to CCH with non-life-threatening injuries.
Above photo: HYANNIS – On two separate occasions yesterday, firefighters and police rushed to a home on Nautical Way for what turned out to be a malfunctioning fire alarm both times. Each time residents evacuated the building while firefighters made sure everything was indeed okay.
Above photo: HYANNIS – Police responded to a residence on Rudder Road to check on the well being of two young children. While responding they learned that a male at the residence had at least one Default Warrant. The first officer on scene did a quick check of the interior and noticed an open window. Other officers responded to the area when it was believed the wanted man may have jumped out the window and fled on foot. When backup arrived, police did a more thorough search of a bedroom in the back part of the house and discovered the wanted suspect hiding inside of a closet. He was arrested without incident and the children were found to be okay, according to sources…
RADIO CHATTER: Other stories that never made it include at least one foot chase where police had to chase down and arrest a man in Centerville according to morning radio chatter… Also police responded to a street in the area of the Cape Cod Hospital after receiving a call from an intoxicated female who was very upset. Officers arrived and radioed that the woman told them she had been raped. It’s important to note that on any given night, Hyannis News is only able to track down and cover a very small fraction of what actually occurs.
Our first responders are always busy, busy, busy… so why do they do it? Knowing what I know about many of these people, I can only tell you it’s a labor of love.
