Rick Brigham: Tomorrow’s Critical Voter Meeting on Contested Hyannis Shelter Move to West Main Street [HN Video]
Hyannis News caught up with longtime shelter worker and community advocate Rick Brigham, who has an important announcement for residents concerned about homelessness in Hyannis—particularly the contested proposal to relocate the St. Joseph’s House overnight shelter from downtown (77 Winter Street) to 460 West Main Street.
Opponents of the move, including Brigham (who worked at the shelter for 27 years), argue the West Main Street site is a poor fit for everyone involved. They note its proximity to several schools, including Hyannis West Elementary roughly 150 yards away, and its location directly across the street from Steve & Sue’s Par-Tee Freeze and mini golf—a popular family destination during the warmer months.
The Tuesday evening meeting of the voters will address specific concerns about the proposed relocation as well as broader solutions for local homelessness. In this video, Brigham urges the public to attend tomorrow’s meeting: Tuesday, October 27, at 6 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center at Barnstable High School.
