Sand, Speed Traps and Swamps…
Marstons Mills – Police officers and a paramedic responded to the Olde Barnstable Fairgrounds Golf Course today where they commandeered and took up positions in golf carts.
They were looking to speak to and evaluate the well being of a confused male who ran out onto the course and waded into a chest-high swamp in between fairways.
Police responded to the area between the airport and golf course on Route 149 for a male who was wandering and causing alarm.
According to one witness, a shirtless white male, approximately 5’9” tall, heavyset, light brown/blondish hair, and what was described as a noticeably obese waistline entered his neighborhood in the area of Popple Bottom Road and Route 149. Apparently the man abandoned his bicycle and continued on foot where he interacted with neighbors who described him as acting strangely and paranoid.
Police arrived and the man fled crossing the fairways at the Olde Barnstable Fairgrounds Golf Course where golfers were out enjoying a beautiful day on the links.
Officer Steve Everett tried to catch up to and reason with the individual as he evaded police by jumping into a “swamp.”
Play continued on all fairways despite the obstacles like a random shoe and a jacket left in the wake of the fleeing lunatic.
Additional police and a COMM paramedic responded, very concerned about the frantic male’s well being. Sergeant Sean Sweeney arrived near the club house pro shop where he boarded a golf cart and responded to the last known area of the fleeing man. According to Sweeney, some golfers inquired as to what he was doing out there and he jokingly replied that he was setting speed traps!
The suspicious male disappeared into the swamp and woods, where he remains at large and “on the loose.” He is not necessarily wanted for any crime, aside from possibly being disorderly for running across golf fairways on what amounted to be a perfectly beautiful day after all…
