Sandwich Death Investigation: Man’s Body Recovered From Rocks at East End of Cape Cod Canal

SANDWICH, MASSACHUSETTS – According to a Sandwich Police media statement, at approximately 9 a.m., Sandwich Police Department dispatch received a call from a concerned fisherman. He reported an unattended bicycle near the jetty at the east end of the Cape Cod Canal. Further down the jetty, he observed an unattended tackle box.
An officer was dispatched and checked the area. Near the end of the jetty, the officer located a male party deep within the rocks. It was determined that the individual was deceased.
Based on his location and positioning in the rocks, recovery was extremely difficult. Members of the Sandwich Fire Department and the Barnstable County Technical Rescue Team recovered the man’s body. The Sandwich Harbormaster’s Office, Massachusetts Environmental Police, U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers assisted with the recovery efforts.
The incident is under investigation by the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office, the Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Sandwich Police Department. The identity of the individual is not being released at this time. Foul play is not suspected, according to the Sandwich PD statement.
