Search for suicidal man…
Hyannis – A young man in his early 20s was upset over a breakup with his girlfriend and reportedly wanted to harm himself.
First responders were told he was actively cutting himself.
Police surrounded a wooded area to the rear of the old Hyannis East Elementary School. Hyannis Rescue also “staged” and waited nearby.
Police and rescue workers deal with several instances of depressed or suicidal individuals on a daily basis.
The above photo, taken at a distance, shows Sergeant Ben Baxter with a shotgun which fires less-than-leathal beanbag rounds.
Officer Jeff Jackson also arrived with his patrol K-9 Elvis to conduct a search of the area.
Tonight’s search ended better than originally expected. Police were able to contact the young man over the phone and he decided to meet with officers several blocks away.
Police quickly learned he had not cut himself as originally thought. The male voluntarily decided to take an ambulance ride to Cape Cod Hospital for further evaluation and support.
There are numerous telephone help lines available to those who may be in crisis; here is a website link to one of the local lines:
