HYANNIS – Suspect reportedly admitted she had the victim’s cash stashed inside her bra…
At about 9:30PM last evening, Barnstable Police responded to Colombo’s Cafe on Main Street after a woman called stating her wallet had been stolen and that she had a possible suspect.
Patrolman Adam Ruggieri arrived at Colombo’s and began gathering a detailed description of the suspect and her last known direction of travel.
Patrolman Brian Morrison immediately began searching for a woman wearing a flower patterned dress. The woman also reportedly had a tattoo on her arm, along with other identifiable features.
Patrolwoman “Katie” Parache was not assigned to the call, but believed she recognized the description and passed the likely suspect’s name along to Patrolman Ruggieri.
A short while later, Patrolman Morrison was turning onto Main Street in the East End when he saw a woman who sort of fit the description, but was wearing different clothing. Morrison investigated further when the woman suddenly ducked into a nearby convenience store.
Patrolman Morrison encountered Lisa Kelly at the Mini Food Mart (A.K.A. “The Red Store”). After a brief investigation, Morrison was able to recover the stolen wallet with the victim’s IDs and credit cards… but no cash. The wallet reportedly contained about $200 in cash at the time it was stolen.
Upon further questioning, Patrolman Morrison convinced Kelly to admit what had happened to the cash. She reportedly told him she had the money stashed inside her bra. The suspect also reportedly admitted to coming across and taking the wallet from on top of the bar. But according to sources, the thief had to have actually reached into the victim’s bag she had right next to her while seated at the bar.
Lisa Kelly, age 54, was arrested and charged with Larceny From A Person (a felony). Kelly was transported back to BPD Headquarters where officers were able to recover most of the stolen money. Money which had been hidden upon her person…
Kelly was held in police custody on $500 cash bail. She is scheduled to be arraigned at Barnstable District Court sometime later this morning.
Kelly is no stranger to local law enforcement and reportedly has several open cases before the Commonwealth.
According to sources, the female victim is a school teacher here visiting from Kingston. She was said to be out celebrating another person’s birthday at the time of the theft. HN was nearby when she was happily reunited with her wallet. She was a good witness and helped her case by providing police with an accurate description.
The entire case was thankfully wrapped up in about an hour. Now it’s up to the court to do their job… (I’ll be saying a little prayer…)
HN NOTE: While Patrolman Morrison was investigating the suspect at the convenience store, he came a across a man on the ground who said he was having a heart attack. The man was not connected to the crime, but since Morrison was right there, Hyannis Rescue was immediately notified and able to quickly respond to the scene…
