Three seriously hurt in head on collision… two airlifted… [Video]
UPDATE – 10:30PM: According to current Sandwich Fire press information, the actual time of the call was 5:12PM. The accident was discovered by a Sandwich Firefighter who happened upon the scene while traveling along Route 130.
All 3 accident victims were considered to be priority one patients, which indicates very serious injury and possible life threatening trauma. In fact, all three patients suffered multiple injuries and trauma. The two patients who were airlifted to area hospitals were badly injured. The third patient was able to communicate with medics to the extent he wanted to be at the same hospital with the female passenger from the same vehicle (the Jeep, as shown in the following video footage). The female patient was airlifted to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence and the male patient was driven to the same hospital by ambulance.
The male driver of the pickup truck was flown to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Both Medflight helicopters took off from a landing zone set up and secured the Sandwich Police at the Henry T. Wing School, a short distance north of the Mid-Cape Highway on Route 130.
HN NOTE: One official made an interesting point and observation as to a possible cause of recent traffic accidents during the late day commute. This official pointed out the very recent changes in setting back the clocks… and that some commuters may not have fully adjusted to the earlier arrival of darkness on the roadways.
A HN reader made another observation… that drivers need to avoid distractions such as cell phones and focus solely on the road. Another point made was that people need to slow down and drive more defensively within the posted speed limits.
The cause of this evening’s accident is still under investigation… but the aforementioned points are worthy of consideration for anyone wishing to reduce the odds of an accident during their commute home.
