UPDATE: HOSPITALIZED YARMOUTH P.D. TRAFFIC OFFICER IN “GOOD CONDITION” AFTER SUFFERING CAR STRIKE
WEST YARMOUTH, MASS – [YPD MEDIA STATEMENT – 2/6/24] – Yarmouth Police and Fire crews responded to Route 28 near Rosemary Lane late Tuesday morning after a Yarmouth Police Traffic Officer was struck by a car while working a detail. The officer was in the roadway wearing high-visibility clothing at the time he was struck. The vehicle’s operator remained on the scene while police investigated. The Traffic Officer was alert when transported to a Boston area hospital with unknown injuries, and his family has been notified. Yarmouth Police are still investigating the crash with the assistance of the Cape Cod Regional Crash Reconstruction unit and the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department Bureau of Criminal Investigations. The names of the officer and operator of the vehicle are being withheld at this time.
UPDATE:
The Traffic Safety Officer struck today suffered multiple injuries but is in good condition at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston. Traffic Officer Sean Ryan is a 12-year veteran of the department. The vehicle’s operator is a 74-year-old male from West Yarmouth. The operator remained on the scene and was questioned by investigators. Charges are pending based on the outcome of the investigation.

WEST YARMOUTH, Mass. – The Yarmouth Police Department received a 911 call on February 6th at 10:56 a.m. reporting an officer directing traffic had been struck by a motor vehicle. Traffic Safety Officer Sean Ryan, a 12-year veteran of the Yarmouth Police Department, had been assigned to a road construction detail on Route 28 in West Yarmouth when he was hit. Ryan also serves as a full-time Public Safety Dispatcher. Yarmouth Traffic Safety Officers are trained and certified to work traffic details.
The driver of the vehicle that struck the officer, Steven Golebiowski, 76, of West Yarmouth, was cited for Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Mark Lanes Violations. Additionally, a request for immediate threat license suspension was filed with the Registry of Motor Vehicles and Golebiowski’s driver’s license has been suspended.
Sean Ryan remains in stable condition at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and is receiving treatment for multiple injuries.
The Yarmouth Police Department extends its gratitude to the men and women of the Yarmouth Fire Department who arrived promptly and provided critical emergency medical treatment to Traffic Safety Officer Ryan.
