Vehicle into Cape Cod Canal… driver rescued… [VIDEO]

BOURNE, MA, 09/06/2016: At approximately 1025 hours, officers from the Bourne Police Department were dispatched to the Cape Cod Canal in the area of Perry Ave for a report of a vehicle that was in the water. Upon arrival, a male was observed to be on the rip rap at the edge of the Canal and a vehicle was observed to be fully submerged. Bourne Police and Bourne Fire personnel assisted with bringing the man to shore. He was determined to be the operator and sole occupant of the vehicle. The male Bourne resident was transported to an area hospital for evaluation of what appeared to be minor injuries. Rescue personnel were later able to recover the vehicle from the Canal waters.
Although the incident is still under investigation, officers were able to determine that the male intentionally drove his vehicle, a 2006 Ford Focus, up a pedestrian walkway that was formerly the base of the original Cape Cod Canal drawbridge. The walkway is located at the end of Perry Ave. The vehicle travelled through a fence at the end of the scenic overlook and came to a rest in the Canal.
The Bourne Police Department would like to thank all those that assisted with the rescue of the vehicle operator and recovery of the vehicle including the Bourne Fire Department, Barnstable County Technical Rescue Dive Team, United States Army Corps, United States Coast Guard, Wareham Harbormaster, Bourne Department of Natural Resources, Massachusetts State Police, Department of Environmental Protection, Eversource Energy, Bobs Trucking, and Big Wheels.
