VIDEO: Driver seat found empty after crash sends boulder flying… police confront suspect returning home later…
OSTERVILLE – DEVELOPING – At about 2:10AM, a Barnstable Patrolman came across a heavily damaged vehicle which had just struck a large boulder, sending it flying into the intersection of Route 28 & South County Road…
When the officer checked the vehicle, the car doors were locked and the driver was nowhere to be found.
Officers ran the registration and then checked an address at 17 Sea Street Extension for the driver. The driver was not there…
Officers set up surveillance on the property and about two hours later the car’s owner returned home in a taxi.
Police then confronted the suspect and asked him if he was just involved in an accident earlier in the morning. The suspect denied any involvement, but officers did not believe him and he was issued a criminal citation…
A HN camera was rolling when officers confronted the suspect. After the police were done speaking with the man, HN had some questions and doubts that needed to be cleared up… the suspect simply told HN that he didn’t do it and went inside his home. He declined to answer any more questions which would perhaps clear up some doubts. For example, ‘if he wasn’t driving, then who was?’
UPDATE: According to Barnstable Police, the midnight shift put a plainclothes officer on the house in an undercover vehicle that the operator was believed to be returning to.
