EYE-OPENING VIDEO: Hyannis Rescue enters homeless camp to help intoxicated man…
Top photo: A homeless man being helped from the dank dark woods out into the light…
HYANNIS – The following video takes viewers into a wooded area on Yarmouth Road. Hyannis Rescue responded to an emergency call yesterday afternoon regarding an unresponsive homeless man. The man was highly intoxicated and a woman inside of the camp called for help.
First responders initially thought they would have to carry the man out of the camp. That wasn’t necessary after all… as rescue workers encouraged and bolstered the patient, he took the steps needed to struggle out of the woods. Once out, he was placed onto a stretcher and transported to CCH.
It’s not a common sight for many, but for police and firefighters, service calls to that particular homeless camp have become routine.
The video begins with dashcam audio and video on the way to the scene. The second HD camera starts off shaky but then eventually settles. (HN has a remedy to avoid the “Blair Witch” effect next time… but the entire shot wasn’t completely blown, the video definitely illustrates the deplorable living conditions of those on our “fringes.” It’s something people need to know about as winter fast approaches…)

VIDEO: Rescue called for two people overdosing on Stuart Street…
HYANNIS – At about 4:34 yesterday afternoon, police and rescue rushed to Stuart Street to help two people who had just overdosed.
While responding, first responders were informed that each patient had already been given Narcan. The dose apparently worked for one of the patients, as he had reportedly left the scene prior to the arrival of emergency workers.
The second patient, a young female, appeared to be still unconscious and police reportedly administered another dose of Narcan. Rescue arrived moments later and took over with the patient…
The young woman was transported to CCH.
HN NOTE: Stuart Street has been the scene of several recent overdoses…
The following video highlights today’s scene.

HN REMINDER:
Our next town meeting begins at 7:00PM this coming Thursday, September 17th.

I’m sure many on our Barnstable Town Council would love to see more people standing up and speaking during the upcoming town meeting. The meeting traditionally provides a time for “public comments.” At the beginning of the meeting, right after the Pledge of Allegiance and a Moment of Silence (which may be used for silent prayer, and I hope many do…), the public will be invited to come up and speak about important and current town issues. Comments have a time limit and there are rules, which a member of the council will explain…
HN receives well written emails from its readers about current town issues. Many of the emails contain great positive ideas and perspectives on how to once again turn Hyannis into a prosperous, safe, and welcoming place for everyone, especially children and young working families.
HN believes Hyannis can become the nicest, cleanest, safest, and most prosperous little seaside city on the East Coast. But we need the right leadership first… and town meetings are a great place to begin to let our government know about our real concerns and needs. HN has its views, but so do many of you… it’s a time to help town leaders fully understanding which are the most pressing issues facing our residents. It is absolutely our duty to stand up and let them know.
This is an important time in our town’s history. We need definitive direction and leadership that will get right to the heart of the matter. It’s a time for action and making things happen. There are so many pressing concerns and there is not a single second to waste. We can no longer afford to allow a confused vocal minority continue to run this town further down the road toward becoming a giant outpatient ward and crime ridden slum.
Let’s set our goals to serve our current residents first. The basics are a good place to start… decent jobs, safety, healthier happier children… The basic things we all need in order to have a reasonable chance at independence and survival. We need to attract young working families and we’re not. Right now many are not working and thriving on their own, needing at least one form of welfare or assistance. It’s demoralizing, and the number of daily calls to help the suicidal are just one depressing indicator that something is terribly wrong here. Let’s save our children and families by making Hyannis a place where people can stand on their own and have a chance. (Then, perhaps, we can take hours out of town meetings to save the globe’s vast oceans… nuclear threats in the Middle East… world hunger… etc.)
Lets’ start with the wellbeing and future of our own residents first.
I hear so many of our young people define success as them moving away from Hyannis. It’s a shame. We are getting absolutely no return on the investment we put into raising and teaching them. We need more of our hard working children to want to stick around, thus making our home that much better…
What can be done to make our town a place where young people would love to live, work, raise a family, and prosper? How can we let job rich businesses know that we are serious and “open for business” …and that our government will make it easy for them move here? … that we are business friendly? A government which facilitates career rich enterprises, and then steps the hell out of the way…
We’re not there yet… not even close. But we could be.
Meanwhile, winter is zeroing in on our downtown area. There are people living in the woods…
This is real.
