VIDEO: Nervous wife called 911 after husband swam channel across Lewis Bay boating lanes…

HYANNIS – A nervous wife set off a chain of events after she lost sight of her husband who went swimming…
The call came in as a possible swimmer in distress, which prompted a response from Hyannis Fire and Barnstable Police to Kalmus Beach yesterday around 4:15PM.
The man reportedly dove off the jetty at Kalmus Beach and swam across the boating lanes toward Egg Island.
Due to the distance, water temps, and heavy boat traffic, firefighters weren’t taking chances and launched the “Senator Kennedy,” one of their rescue boats.
The channel between Kalmus and “Egg Island” (an island which, according to some of our salty old timers, is said to be an old chicken farm that was reduced to an area of sand bars after a violent storm many decades ago…), is not only a significant span of choppy water as you enter the larger area of Lewis Bay, it is also the major boating lane for the area’s fishing boats, pleasure craft, and ferries.
As you will see in the following video, the man had reached Egg Island safely, but then needed to be coaxed to swim over to the Senator Kennedy, where he boarded, and was brought to the School Street docks to be evaluated EMTs.
The man appeared to be in good health as firefighters had him sign treatment refusal papers as a formality.
HN NOTE: I used a new long range camera which should have been on a tripod for more optimal images. The camera should have also had a “dead cat” mic or some other tool to reduce wind interference, but overall the camera gives HN the ability to reach way offshore, bringing HN viewers new images that use to be out of range.
