Violent Mashpee Crash: MedFlights Scramble for Seriously Injured Victims [HN Video]
MASHPEE, MASSACHUSETTS — A violent collision at the intersection of Route 151 and Old Barnstable Road left at least two victims seriously injured late Wednesday night. The crash occurred around 10 p.m.
Both vehicles were heavily damaged, forcing firefighters to battle twisted metal while cutting trapped victims from the wreckage.
One badly injured patient was rushed to Falmouth Hospital and loaded onto a MedFlight helicopter for an emergency airlift to an off-Cape trauma center. A second patient was sped by ambulance toward Cape Cod Hospital after a second MedFlight helicopter was requested — only to be canceled for the time being as ground transport continued to the emergency room. (NOTE: There was a second MedFlight helicopter that took off from the airport in Hyannis this morning at around 2:30 a.m… but it remains uncertain whether or not it was for the same crash.) At least one additional ambulance responded to the Route 151 scene to treat a third patient with less serious injuries. [DEVELOPING]
Mashpee police summoned crash reconstruction specialists to determine the exact cause of the devastating smash-up. According to radio transmissions, both seriously injured patients were male, ages estimated from 20 into their 30s, both suffering injuries described as “multi-system trauma.” No further details on the victims’ conditions have been released.
