ONSET – Last evening at about 8:40 p.m., Massachusetts Parole Officers developed information that a wanted man was staying at a house on Mason Street Extension, according to a statement from the Wareham Police Department.
Gino Gaillardetz, age 56, of Chelsea is currently on parole for murder and is also currently being investigated for an unspecified recent crime in the Boston area.

Five Wareham police officials accompanied several parole officers while attempting to serve the warrant at the Mason Street address. While searching the house, it became apparent that Gaillardetz had concealed himself in an attic space, in such a way that officers would not be able to access him safely. A decision was made to surround the house. Police were not taking any chances…
Multiple off-duty Wareham police officers responded from their homes after a request for assistance was sent out.
The Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council SWAT team also responded, along with the Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department, Massachusetts State Police, and a command unit from the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council, according to the WPD statement.
A local ambulance also staged nearby.
The area was secured and neighboring houses were evacuated.
Shortly before 10:00 p.m, Gaillardetz reportedly began striking the attic exhaust fan in an attempt to escape. Chief John Walcek of the Wareham Police Department then used a cruiser loud speaker, directing Gaillardetz to surrender and come out of the house. Within a few minutes, the suspect reportedly appeared in the kitchen and was placed in custody without further incident.
Gaillardetz was then transported to the Wareham police station to be processed before being turned over to the parole officers.
The SWAT team performed a protective sweep of the house to ensure that no other suspects or weapons were inside.
“This potentially dangerous situation involving a convicted murderer was resolved safely by the professionalism and cooperation of several law enforcement agencies,” said Chief Walcek in a written statement. Chief Walcek then went on to thank members of his department who responded from their homes to assist, also praising his communications officers who coordinated incoming resources while also handling regular routine calls…

According to the WPD statement, there was an additional issue reported nearby during the incident: A neighbor reportedly refused to evacuate and came outside his house holding a firearm. After Gaillardetz was secured, sheriff’s deputies allegedly observed the male in his doorway with a pistol in his hand. Chief Walcek and other officers approached the male and it was determined he had a lawful firearms permit, however a decision was made to seize his permit and firearm pending an additional investigation.
