BPD UPDATE: SUSPECT FIRED AT SWAT VEHICLE…
INITIAL HN REPORT & VIDEO:
HYANNIS, Massachusetts – A 30-year-old man (officially identified as Justin Moreira) is in custody after an all-day standoff that held police at bay for hours, according to radio transmissions.
As you will see and hear in the following HN Video, at around 7:41 a.m. – Wednesday, March 6, 2024 – Barnstable Police patrol officers responded to an address on Saint Francis Circle for a man holding his mother at knife point. All occupants, including the mother and another son, were able to eventually leave the home with the suspect still inside.
While en route, officers learned the man has a criminal history involving firearms and threats… and he has reportedly been arrested with firearms in the past, according to radio transmissions.
Responding officers also learned the suspect was barricaded inside with an open gun safe, and that he would have access to everything inside that safe, according to radio transmissions.
SWAT was activated and specially trained police resources began responding from across the Cape… and as far away as Plymouth.
Rescue responded to the vicinity to evaluate the mother.
As patrol officers were setting up a perimeter around the residence, the suspect could be seen moving around and pointing a gun, according to radio traffic.
Responding officers had armed themselves with patrol rifles and additional ballistic gear.
Suddenly, the suspect was observed opening up some shades while firing shots out the front window. In the following HN Video, an officer can be heard saying, “SHOTS FIRED OUT THE FRONT WINDOW! SHOTS FIRED OUT THE FRONT WINDOW!” And the gunfire was described as “multiple shots.”
Nobody was hit and there were no reported injuries, according to radio transmissions.
The suspect’s firearm may have been equipped with a laser.
Police began evacuating people from neighboring homes.
At one point, it sounds like two of the initial patrol officers on scene had been pinned down by the gunfire, according to radio transmissions. A SWAT vehicle may have been used to provide cover for the pinned down officers… [DEVELOPING]
The Cape Cod Regional SWAT Team eventually took over full command of the situation.
According to a BPD media statement, a “shelter in place” was sent out to neighboring homes within a mile radius of the gunfire and ongoing barricaded suspect.
Schools were reportedly placed on lock-down for a period of time, until police were certain they had the suspect completely surrounded and contained.
Shortly after 4:00 p.m., after an all-day standoff, it was announced the suspect was in custody.
