HYANNIS HAMMER ATTACKER IN CUSTODY, COPS SAY… [NEW DETAILS]
HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS – [UPDATED W/ OFFICIAL DETAILS] – According to a report narrative filed in Barnstable District Court by Patrolwoman Denise Baldner, last Thursday, August 1, 2024, at around 1:35 a.m., Barnstable Police officers were dispatched to the intersection of North Street and Winter Street for a male who had been hit with a hammer. And according to additional police sources, responding officers found a male victim in his 60s down on the sidewalk, suffering a head wound. Sources tell HN that the victim is a disabled United States war veteran. The victim told officers that he had been just struck on the head with a hammer by a black male on a bicycle. The suspect on the bicycle was no longer on scene. The victim was able to tell officers that the suspect was known on the streets by the nickname “Dane.” As you will see in the following HN Video, the hammer attack victim was transported to Cape Cod Hospital by Hyannis Firefighters.
Police found a nearby witness who stated he was inside a tent in the North Street area when he saw “Dane” attack the victim by striking him in the head with a hammer. Officers searched the area for “Dane” but were unable to find him early Thursday morning.
Later Thursday morning, at approximately 11:30 a.m., Patrolwoman Baldner spoke with Patrolman Sanders of the BPD Community Impact Unit who advised her that he was able to identify “Dane” with the help of Community Service Officers (Yellow Shirts) who patrol the downtown Main Street area. Dane’s real name was reportedly discovered to be Danal Jourey, and based on her investigation, Officer Baldner respectfully requested an arrest warrant for the charge of Assault & Battery with a Dangerous Weapon (a hammer) on a Person Over 60.
Later Thursday, 8/1/2024, Sergeant Christopher Ross, supervisor of the BPD’s CIU spoke with the victim who told him he had been attacked and struck twice on the head with a hammer… and that he was also bitten on the arm during the attack. In a supplemental police report, Sergeant Ross noted he observed a large bite mark on the victim’s left arm, which showed the outline of human teeth. The bite was reportedly still bleeding and painful. Due to the bite wound on the victim’s arm, Sergeant Ross requested and was granted that the additional charge of Assault & Battery on a Person Over 60 be added to the warrant.
Danal Journey, 46, a homeless person living in Hyannis, was later arrested and arraigned on the charges of A&B WITH A DANGEROUS WEAPON (HAMMER) and A&B ON A DISABLED PERSON OVER 60. Both are felony charges.
The disabled United States war veteran is recovering from his wounds. No additional information available at the time of this report… [If there’s time, HN will try to dig up additional information regarding the suspect…]
* The details contained in the above HN report are based on police radio transmissions on the morning of the attack, warrant and arrest reports filed in Barnstable District Court, along with information from police sources. The defendant is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
