*** WATCH *** DOWNTOWN HYANNIS SHOOTING – ONE MAN MEDFLIGHTED – BULLETS PENETRATED PARKED BMW & HYANNIS HOTEL ROOM, SOURCES SAY [NEW HN VIDEO, PLUS LATEST DETAILS!]
HYANNIS – Gunfire erupted and a man was struck in the legs in the middle of Main Street, on a bustling Sunday afternoon near the intersection with High School Road, at around 4:30 p.m. yesterday. The sudden gun violence happened at a time when tourists and local Main Street patrons were out in numbers, some pushing strollers, some with small children in tow. It had been a quiet Sunday afternoon up to that point – the sun would finally break through an earlier haze – when the sound of gunshots rang out, which could be heard by those visiting the local candy shop and outdoor cocktail lounges.
The shooting happened on the street, right in front of the Hyannis Inn Hotel, where police and community service officers found a young man with bullet wounds down on the street in front of a parked black BMW sedan. The BMW had also been riddled with several bullets, at least three, as you will see in the following HN Video. As trained, the officers first tried to stop the bleeding while waiting for Hyannis FD paramedics to arrive on scene to assist with more advanced emergency life-support, if needed. (Just about all Barnstable Police Officers and young Community Service Officers now carry tourniquets and other first aid supplies on their belts or vests…) The young gunshot victim was reportedly transported to Cape Cod Hospital in a Hyannis FD ambulance under a trauma alert. He would later be flown to a Boston area trauma center in a Medflight helicopter, with “non-life-threatening injuries,” Barnstable Police say.
There was a noticeable amount of blood on the sidewalk and the entire area was immediately shut down and cordoned off with crime scene tape.
It was an extremely active and horrifying scene for people simply out for a stroll, trying to enjoy the day. Tourists looked on in shock as a wave of police abruptly took over the downtown area, starkly contrasted against welcoming storefronts and a church sign which announced in bold letters, “TOGETHER WE CAN LOVE OTHERS WITH GODS LOVE!
One witness of the gunfire told HN he immediately fled the scene in his vehicle toward the West End of Main Street, first checking himself for bullet holes, then checking his vehicle – thankfully, there were no holes in either him or his vehicle. But there had been multiple shots. And at least one bullet reportedly penetrated one of the hotel rooms at the Hyannis Inn, according to a source.
There were no other injuries other than the man who was hit in the legs and found down on the roadway in front of the popular hotel, once used by John F Kennedy’s staff during his presidential campaign, just over 60 years ago – less bullets were flying around on the Cape during those days…
A possible suspect vehicle was found in the middle of High School Road, just south of South Street, right next to the Saint Francis Xavier Church. The vehicle was found damaged from an apparent collision it had with an uninvolved vehicle as it allegedly fled the shooting scene, according to a police media statement. “The passengers in the uninvolved vehicle were not injured in the accident,” according to the statement prepared by Lt. Mark Mellyn of the Barnstable Police Department. Two possible suspects, possibly masked men, reportedly fled the vehicle on foot through backyards on High School Road, east, in the direction of the hospital, according to police radio transmissions. A police K9 hit the ground tracking…
Mutual aid patrol officers from the Yarmouth Police and the Massachusetts State Police made their way to the area to assist.
According to a radio transmissions, it sounds like at least one person has been taken into custody [DEVELOPING].
HN checked with police personnel early this morning AND it is HN’s current understanding that the police are still actively looking for suspects [DEVELOPING]. AND based on their initial media statement, police are seeking help from the public: “Based on the initial investigation, this was not an act of random violence. The case remains under investigation by the Barnstable Police Department patrol and detective units. If you have any information regarding the incident, please call 508-775-0387.”
The following two HN Videos contain footage from the High School Road and Main Street crime scene locations. The first video also contains soundbites from Barnstable Police radio transmissions. The second video covers a scene on High School Road, several hours after the initial investigation. Patrol officers located key evidence in one of the backyards where the suspects were believed to have fled. As you will see, they were able to locate the evidence right as a heavy fog rolled in across downtown Hyannis. According to police radio transmissions, it sounded like officers may have found a “140,” code for a firearm, but police on scene were reluctant to confirm what they had actually found and processed to the rear of the High School Road property… [DEVELOPING] HN will provide official updates, clarifications and additional information as it becomes available – check back for updates…
