*** WATCH *** Homeowner and his dog safe thanks to functioning smoke detectors… [UPDATED DETAILS]
HARWICH – A homeowner and his dog are both safe this morning thanks to their home’s functioning smoke detectors.
As you will see and hear in the following HN Video, at around 4:35 a.m. this morning, crews responded to 475 Sisson Road after a homeowner was awakened by a sounding smoke detector. He then alerted Harwich Fire Department upon finding a light smoke haze inside the residence.
Crews arrived and discovered fire in a crawl space below a wood stove which had been in use. Firefighters stretched a line through the front door and were able to quickly extinguish the fire.
The homeowner and his golden retriever had safely evacuated and were uninjured. The historic Harwich home, built in 1865 (the year of President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination), was saved due to proper functioning smoke detectors and the effective response of local firefighters. The home was ventilated, and the homeowner and his dog were able to eventually return inside…

SMOKE ALARMS MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
At 4:31hrs on Friday, the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office (Harwich Fire Alarm) received a call for smoke alarms sounding and smoke in the basement at 465 Sisson Rd.
The response to a reported structure fire in Harwich includes an Automatic Mutual Response from Dennis, Brewster and Chatham.
Companies arrived to find a light smoke condition in the basement. The source was determined to be the floor structure in the crawl space area underneath the first floor wood stove. The fire was quickly extinguished.
The homeowner reported that the smoke alarm woke them up, and that was when he discovered the smoke.
Without this early warning, this could have been a much different outcome, as the fire would have continued to burn in a concealed area.
