*** WATCH/LISTEN *** BARNSTABLE HIGH SCHOOL STAFF HUSTLE TO EVACUATE STUDENTS AFTER SMOKE CONDITION IN BOILER ROOM
HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS – [HN VIDEO NOTES] – The following HN Video provides a rare glimpse into what it takes to evacuated Barnstable High School during a possible emergency. HN’s radio car and recorders were parked off campus but were able to capture high school staff systematically clearing the building, making sure all students safely made it outside.
At around 10:30 a.m. today, Hyannis Firefighters and Barnstable Police responded to reports of smoke in the area of the Performing Arts Center. Upon further investigation, first responders discovered a smoke condition in an adjacent boiler room. According to radio transmissions, the smoke had been caused by a compressor belt burning up. Firefighters ventilated the smoke while school staff checked the building for smoke odors. Students and staff were quickly able to return into the building and resume their normal schedules, which included the first lunch block…
… which being Friday, and according to when HN attended BHS in the late 1970s/early 1980s, used to mean PIZZA DAY… which happened to be my favorite lunch… and the wonderful lunch ladies always took extra-good care of me by hooking me up with an extra-large rectangular piece, God bless ’em. [A valuable lunch line lesson: “a sincere smile and a little flattery pays dividends on pizza day…”]
