*** WATCH *** Man, 52, Accused of Drunk Driving After Report of Wrong-Way Vehicle Plowing Over Hyannis Traffic Sign
HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS — A 52-year-old man was arrested Sunday night after Barnstable police responded to a report of a wrong-way vehicle that plowed over a traffic sign on Route 132.
Patrol officers were notified shortly before 10 p.m. of the suspected wrong-way driver — described as a white Infiniti with front-end damage — that was reportedly spotted crossing the median curbing and traveling on the wrong side of the road. The wrong-way operation and crash were reported by a caller, according to radio transmissions.
Officers searched the Cape Cod Mall area and eventually located the damaged [white vehicle] on Route 28 eastbound. They stopped the vehicle on Walton Avenue just south of Route 28.
The sole occupant, identified as Ozeias Franco, 52, currently residing in Hyannis, stepped out of the vehicle as directed. Because he spoke Portuguese, officers used a language translation line to administer field sobriety test instructions. Hyannis News video shows Franco struggling with the roadside tests. He was placed under arrest on suspicion of drunk driving and taken to Barnstable Police Headquarters for booking.
A Barnstable County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit later photographed the damaged [white vehicle] and the downed signage near the shuttered Tiki Port restaurant on Route 132.
Franco was charged with Operating Under the Influence of Liquor, Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle, and Marked Lanes Violation. Additional charges may follow. He is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
