BARNSTABLE, MASSACHUSETTS – According to a Yarmouth Police report by Patrolman Thomas Belinkski, Christopher Hughes, 29, of Sandwich… who is employed as a Catholic Priest by Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville (according to an arrest sheet filed in Barnstable District Court), had a blood alcohol content of .17 (which is over twice the legal limit) after he crashed his vehicle into some large rocks and a fence on Route 6A in Yarmouth Port Friday evening.
As you will see and hear in the following HN Video, Yarmouth police and firefighters responded to a single vehicle crash on Route 6A, just west of the intersection with Mill Lane at around 9:20 p.m. Friday evening. The driver (later identified as Chris Hughes) was reportedly still inside the vehicle and believed to possibly be intoxicated. Hughes was not injured and was eventually arrested on the suspicion of Operating Under the Influence (OUI), according to a police source. The vehicle appears to have left the roadway before crashing into rocks and a fence. Damage from the crash rendered the vehicle inoperable. The following HN Video highlights the crash scene and arrest.
When asked by Patrolman Belinkski if he had been drinking, Hughes reportedly told him he had two Johnny Walker Black Labels (which is scotch whisky) earlier in the evening. Hughes was placed under arrest after attempting several field sobriety tests. During the booking process at Yarmouth PD Headquarters, Hughes reportedly agreed to take a breathalyzer test which resulted in a .17 blood alcohol content measurement. Hughes was charged with OUI Liquor, Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle, and Mark Lanes violation.
According to multiple sources, Hughes is a Catholic priest with the Diocese of Fall River. Father Hughes is listed as being the Chaplain at the St. John Paul II School in Hyannis. He is also listed as the “Parochial Vicar” at the Our Lady of Victory Church in Centerville, as well as at the Our Lady of Assumption Church in Osterville.
Hughes pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in Barnstable District Court earlier today. He is scheduled for a pretrial hearing on May 15, 2025.
