*** WATCH *** Overnight Lift: 182-Foot Willow Street Bike Bridge Installed, Linking Hyannis to Cape Cod Rail Trail
Watch the dramatic overnight installation of the new 182-foot steel Willow Street Bike Bridge spanning busy Willow Street in West Yarmouth, near the Route 6 eastbound on-ramp. Part of the Cape Cod Rail Trail Phase 3 extension, the bridge rises about 25 feet above the roadway and creates the first uninterrupted connection between Barnstable (Hyannis area) and the existing Rail Trail that begins in the West Yarmouth area. Cyclists and pedestrians can now safely cross what was a hazardous multi-lane road and more easily access the popular paved trail heading east toward Wellfleet and the Outer Cape, according to online sources.
This milestone advances Vision 88, a long-term regional planning vision and initiative led by the Cape Cod Commission. Its goal is to create a continuous (or closely connected) network of approximately 88 miles of primarily off-road, paved shared-use paths for cyclists and pedestrians spanning Cape Cod from Woods Hole (via the Shining Sea Bikeway area in Falmouth) through connections involving the Cape Cod Canal paths and other segments, ultimately reaching Provincetown (including toward the Province Lands trails), according to online sources.
