On Wednesday April 20, 2022 Wellfleet Police received numerous 911 calls regarding a surfer who had fallen off his board and was unconscious. The surfer was identified as Martin Mackey, 48, of Brunswick, Maine. He was transported to Cape Cod Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. Preliminary investigation reveals no foul play. The matter remains under investigation by Wellfleet Police, State Police detectives assigned to the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Press Release from Chief Hurley of the Wellfleet PD:
On Wednesday April 20th at approximately 1045 hours the Wellfleet Police and Fire departments received several E-911 calls reporting a surfer attached to a board who was face down in the water at LeCount Hollow Beach. Upon arrival, Officer Mark Braun along with several surfers went into the water and quickly brought the male victim out onto the beach. Once out of the water CPR was immediately in progress as Wellfleet EMS personnel began life saving measures before transporting the victim to Cape Cod Hospital.
At this time, the incident is under investigation by the Wellfleet Police Department along with State Police Detectives assigned to the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s office. Any questions should be directed to the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s office.
The Wellfleet Police and Fire Departments were assisted at the scene by the Department of Public Works, Cape Cod National Seashore Rangers and several surfers who were instrumental in getting the victim out of the water.
