“Wolf Moon” Ushers in 2026 with a Subdued Howl!

ABOVE: My trusty news mutt, Arya, getting all fired up before heading out on our regular overnight news gathering several days ago. We find our energy tends to ramp up in the days prior to a full moon… and so does the craziness on the street – but last evening, thankfully, was relatively quiet.

HN NOTES: Nothing major happened during the overnight, despite the waxing gibbous – just the usual domestic violence and drunk driving arrests. The above HN snapshot was taken very early last evening. According to online sources, last evening’s “waxing gibbous moon” was expected to reach its peak illumination around 5:03 a.m. this morning – Saturday, January 3, 2026 – becoming the first full moon of 2026. This particular full moon is known as the Wolf Moon. Which tends to get my dog and me a bit fired up!

The Wolf Moon is named for the hungry wolves that supposedly howled more during January’s winter chill in Native American and medieval folklore, according to online sources. And this one’s extra special: it’s also a supermoon, appearing bigger and brighter since the moon’s at its closest point to Earth.

Last evening may have been a bit subdued in terms of crime and craziness, but the day is young and I fully expect some extra “zoomies” on the home front… and possibly around town as well.
