ARREST VIDEO: Police take down female bank robbery suspect(s) just hours after heist… dramatic police chase… ‘Thelma & Louise-type’ crime duo allegedly rammed into cops! [UPDATED… one held on only $25,000 bail, the other now walking the streets again! ]
The following is the official Barnstable Police press release:
On 10/09/2014, at approximately 5:42pm Barnstable Police Officers were dispatched to the TD Bank, 307 Main Street, Hyannis for a reported unarmed robbery. Witnesses stated a black female entered the bank and presented the teller with a note demanding money. The female suspect then fled the bank with approximately $450 dollars. The female suspect was quickly identified by police officers viewing bank video surveillance as SHAINAH LOPES, age 32, homeless. Note: At the time of the robbery, members of the Barnstable Police Department and Barnstable Street Crime Unit were actively searching for LOPES regarding her direct involvement in a purse snatching that had occurred at approximately 1:20pm on North Street in Hyannis.
Immediately after the bank robbery, the victim from the earlier purse snatching observed LOPES in the area of the Cascade Motor Lodge on Main Street, Hyannis and called 911. Multiple Barnstable Police Units responded to the area, but could not locate LOPES. The Barnstable Detective Division and Street Crime Unit then initiated surveillance in the east end of Main Street Hyannis in an attempt to find LOPES.
At approximately 9:35pm, a 2012 Volkswagen van was observed pulling into the side parking lot of the Cascade Motor Lodge. The van was registered to family member of Brianna E McCarron, age 26, of Yarmouth. McCarron is a known associate of LOPES. The surveillance units then observed a person dressed in black quickly emerge from a darkened area and enter the rear seat of the van. The VW van then left the parking lot and the surveillance units followed.
While surveilling the van, the person that had jumped in the back seat of the vehicle appeared to be purposely hiding from view. McCarron then turned into the TJ Maxx parking lot off Barnstable Road. Surveillance units then activated their blue lights and sirens to signal McCarron to stop; however she failed to do so and attempted to flee the parking lot at a high rate of speed. McCarron attempted to elude numerous police vehicles, and eventually collided with two (2) Barnstable Police Units. LOPES then tried to run from the vehicle, but was quickly detained. LOPES then ignored police commands and physically resisted attempts to be handcuffed. Officers were eventually able to secure LOPES with handcuffs. Both LOPES and MCCARRON were placed under arrest and transported to the Barnstable Police Department.
LOPES’s has a lengthy criminal history. In August of 2014, she was arrested by members of the Barnstable Street Crime Unit on several outstanding warrants. After this arrest, LOPES escaped from the rear of a police cruiser while still handcuffed. She was then tracked down several days later by the Street Crimes Unit and arrested again. LOPES was sentenced to 59 days in the Barnstable House of Corrections and was just released on 10/03/2014. In addition, LOPES was also convicted in Barnstable Superior Court on 04/15/2005 for 2 counts of Armed Robbery in Dennis, Massachusetts
They were charged with the following:
Shainah E Lopes: Unarmed robbery (TD Bank)
Resisting arrest (TD Bank)
Larceny from person (purse theft)
Brianna E McCarron: Operating after suspension
Operating to endanger
Failure to stop for a police officer
The incident is still under investigation and additional charges may be filed.
Shainah Lopes and Brianna McCarron, both were arraigned at Barnstable District court on 10/10/14; LOPES was held on $25,000 cash bail, MCCARRON was release on personal…
The following is the initial Hyannis News coverage of this incident:
HYANNIS – Witnesses described it as a wild chase that lasted nearly two minutes, with multiple cars speeding around in circles in a popular HyTown parking lot.
One witness even had time to move her car up onto her store’s sidewalk in order to prevent it from being hit.
Suddenly the chase ended in a loud crash. One detective’s SUV was struck. Another police SUV was rammed against the side of the suspect vehicle…
The suspects were now pinned in, surrounded by numerous police units. Detectives and uniformed officers rushed the vehicle and took the feisty female driver into custody.
At the same time, police latched onto the passenger, their prime bank robbery suspect. The female suspect reportedly put up a fight as officers brought her to the pavement, cuffing her after a brief struggle.
Both suspects were eventually secured in cruisers, but not without protesting and jousting all the way (see video)…
According to Barnstable Police Lieutenant John Murphy, the passenger was Shaina Lopes, age 32, of Hyannis, and she will be charged with the bank robbery which occurred at the TD Bank at 307 Main Street earlier in the day.
Shaina “Shay-Lo” Lopes was also the suspect in another earlier crime which took place near the McDonald’s Restaurant on North Street this afternoon. Lopes was wanted for larceny from a person after allegedly reaching in through a window and grabbing a woman’s purse and other belongings.
Shay-Lo is no stranger to police, and just recently escaped from the back of a police cruiser while handcuffed (this past August), leading police on a two day hunt. Click here for more on that story…
The above chase ended and became a crime scene in the Staples parking lot off Barnstable Road in Hyannis…

Earlier…
At about 5:35pm, Barnstable Police responded to the TD Bank on Main Street after it just had been robbed.
According to radio transmissions, the suspect was possibly a ‘short black male with a mustache.’ After considering the clothing description, crime scene images, and other evidence at the scene, investigators quickly learned they were actually looking for Shaina Lopes, a female, seemingly on a special one-day crime spree.
A team was organized, which involved surveillance in the East End of Hyannis.
Investigators were closing in on Shay-Lo, following a Honda SUV on Barnstable Road and preparing for a felony stop when the vehicle suddenly turned into the Staples parking lot. That’s when the wild chase began…
Witnesses could not believe their eyes… at about 9:30pm, right when the shopping plaza stores were all closing up, the parking lot virtually empty… all hell broke loose…
One witness said the nearly vacant parking lot suddenly filled with flashing blue lights, police vehicles, and noise…
Stunned, it took witnesses a moment to start video recording with their cellphones… (HN will provide updates if any of the cellphone video captures the chase scene…)
No police officers were injured according to sources on scene.
The incident is still under investigation, Lopes will be charged with the Bank Robbery (she reportedly did not show a weapon) and other crimes.
Investigators are still trying to figure out the other woman’s involvement. She very likely will receive charges related to the police chase, maybe others from the day…
Official charges on both women will be included in a press release later today.
Standby for updated information, video, and stills…
The following video begins by highlighting the wild police chase scene just as officers were placing both women in custody… the video also shows various scenes from the earlier bank robbery… [Press play]
