BREAKING NEWS UPDATE: Shaina “Shay-Lo” Lopes arrested after two days on the loose…
UPDATE 8/11/2014 1:30am: Last night at about midnight, Yarmouth Police Officer Nicholas Ambrosini of the Barnstable SCU responded to an address in Marstons Mills where he found Shaina “Shay-Lo” Lopes hiding out.
Lopes had been on the loose since she escaped from the back of a police cruiser this past Friday evening. An accomplice opened the cruiser door for her, which enabled Lopes to run off with her arms still handcuffed behind her back. The accomplice was arrested Friday evening, but police were unable to locate Lopes.
Last night’s capture of Shaina Lopes went without further incident. Lopes was not wearing the handcuffs from Friday evening, but very likely received a fresh pair.
Lopes was transported back to BPD Headquarters for booking and will be held until she is taken over to court later this morning.
SCU will be releasing further details and HN will share those as soon as they are made available.
Original HN coverage of Friday evening’s escape:
Handcuffed woman still at large after escaping from cruiser…
HYANNIS – At about 9:30pm last night, SCU members took a woman into custody for two felony default warrants near the intersection of Charles Street and Grove Street. She was handcuffed and placed in a police cruiser.
Right after the SCU officer got behind the wheel in order to transport the female to booking, another female came along and opened the rear cruiser door where the handcuffed woman was seated. This allowed the prisoner to get out and flee.
The officer quickly jumped out and arrested the second woman who had opened the cruiser door.
The woman who had just fled had both arms handcuffed behind her back, yet still managed to run off into the darkness, escaping through the back yards of a thickly settled family neighborhood.
Additional SCU and Barnstable squad cars quickly saturated the general area, setting up a tight perimeter.
A K-9 unit was immediately called in from Yarmouth and was able to hit the groud tracking within minutes.
Meanwhile, officers watched vehicles entering the area, stopping and looking into the backseats of taxis.
There was a lot of pedestrian foot traffic, which made conditions more difficult for the K-9 tracking the suspect’s scent.
Witnesses nearby on Birch Street told police they saw the handcuffed suspect running through a backyard toward Washington Ave.
Police swarmed the densely populated neighborhood for well over an hour, yet were unable to locate the woman. It is very likely she received assistance and was either hidden in one of the houses or driven out of the area.
Barnstable Police and SCU are still looking for Shainah “Shay-Lo” Lopes, age 32, of Hyannis. Lopes is no stranger to local law enforcement and police are confident they will locate her sooner than later.
Lopes’ friend, Latrona Sims, age 34, of Hyannis was arrested and taken back to BPD Headquarters for her part in opening the cruiser door and assisting with the escape. According to sources, police are still determining the array of charges against Sims.
The incident remains under investigation by SCU.
In other news:
HYANNIS – Yesterday afternoon, police arrested William Callaghan, age 51, for several outstanding warrants from another off-cape jurisdiction.
Patrol officers had received a tip that Callaghan was in the area visiting a relative. When they arrived at the relative’s address to investigate, they learned he had already left on a red mountain bike. A description was put out and patrols were informed he was known to take off running from police.
Multiple downtown squad cars searched the surrounding streets but were unable to locate Callaghan.
About a half hour later, police received a second tip that Callaghan was sitting on a stone wall on High School Road near the McDonalds. Officers quickly moved in and surrounded Callaghan, who was taken into custody and booked on felony probation-related warrants.
In other news:
HYANNIS – Yesterday at about 4pm, police received a call from the manager of the CVS on North Street regarding suspicious activity related to a man and his prescription pills.
Police arrived and detained a 35-year-old man.
There were allegations that two males had purchased Valium from the detained man. A description was put out regarding the two suspects who may have purchased as many as 5 pills.
Police located a man about a block away near the Salvation Army who fit the description and was in possession of 5 of the exact type of pills in question. He was transported back to CVS but the manager there did not identify him as one of the suspects, so the man was released.
Meanwhile, the man in handcuffs informed officers he may have overdosed on his medication. Hyannis Rescue drove about half a block and arrived at the busy neighboring CVS. They evaluated the man and determined he was well enough to remain in police custody.
The 35-year-old man did have a significant record but police needed more to charge him criminally with today’s allegations. He was still taken into protective custody and transported to BPD Headquarters due to his high level of intoxication.
