AUDIO SNIPPET: Come play in the streets… but keep an eye on the kiddies…
HYANNIS – Today we had a Hyannis Open Streets event where the police shut down Main Street to vehicle traffic between Ocean Street and Sea Street.
Welcoming our community to come play in the streets of Hytown is a great idea and something that hopefully will continue under heavy police protection.
But the realities still are that we have too many social service agencies too close to the downtown Main Street area.
Main Street Hyannis is, and should be, the town’s “bread and butter” in terms of tourism. It’s a major attraction and we need to cherish and protect that area…
… but the realities of having major social service industries too close to our tourism Mecca don’t always jive.
SPOILER ALERT: The following brief police audio snippet is not the sort of thing the “Come play in the streets” planners had in mind while organizing their well-intended community event, but the reality IS what it is..
The issue of providing for those in need, while also providing for local families and those in our business community is one of the most important issues we now face as a community.
