BARNSTABLE COPS: Woman was dragged by fleeing vehicle driven by man who had just broken into her home…
The following is the actual BPD press statement:
On Wednesday October 26, 2016 approximately 1715 hrs, Barnstable Police responded to Santuit Newtown Rd for a recent breaking and entering into a home.
While Patrol Officers were responding to the area, dispatch received a second call reporting that a woman had just arrived at her Santuit -Newtown Rd home and observed an unknown male exit her residence. The homeowner reported that the unknown male ran towards a white vehicle parked in the driveway. The woman attempted to stop the suspect from leaving by opening the passenger’s door and reaching for the keys, however, the suspect was able to get the vehicle into reverse and backed up with the passenger door still open. The woman was struck by the open car door, and dragged a short distance before being knocked to the ground.
Barnstable Police Detectives were able to obtain information from the New Hampshire registration of the suspect vehicle, and Richard Herrera (DOB 3/27/64) of School St in Marstons Mills was developed as a possible suspect. A short time later, Patrol Officer Anson Moore observed the suspect vehicle traveling at a fast rate of speed on Santuit-Newtown Rd. A motor vehicle stop of the suspect car was conducted and the operator was confirmed to be Richard Herrera.
The above referenced homeowner subsequently identified Herrera as the man that broke into her residence and hit her with the motor vehicle as he fled the scene.
Herrera was arrested and transported to the Barnstable Police station where he was booked.
Barnstable Police Detectives searched Herrera’s School St residence and recovered property stolen in three separate residential B&E’s. Herrera has an extensive criminal history which includes an 8-10 year prison sentence for Armed Robbery in 1994, as well as a second 8-10 year prison sentence for an Armed Robbery conviction in 2004. This morning, Herrera was arraigned in Barnstable First District Court and subsequently held on $25,000 bail for the following charges:
B&E Day w/intent to commit felony (2 counts)
A&B D/W (motor vehicle)
Larceny in a building
Herrera will face additional charges related to the third B&E.
