HYANNIS – At about 12:48pm, police responded to Barnstable High School for a report of a bomb threat.
Moments later, Principal Patrick Clark made the decision to sound the alarms and evacuate the entire school.
A Massachusetts State Police Bomb Tech was nearby and also responded to assist.
According to police sources, no device was found.
Police are investigating how the bomb threat came in and were tracing a telephone land-line at one point during the scare. Phone company security may also be involved in the investigation. Police were unable to officially confirm too many details at this point in their investigation.
The building was cleared, and the decision was made to repopulate the school at 1:40pm, allowing students to catch their school buses home.
According to Sergeant Riley of the BPD, he has been looking at information regarding a rash of recent bomb threats across the state. From his recollections, there may have been as many as 12 other bomb threats in recent days at schools and colleges across the commonwealth. It is uncertain whether today’s bomb threat is related.
According to sources, Barnstable High School had another bomb threat this past Monday. That threat came in at about 12:45pm and students reentered the building at approximately 1:30pm.
Today’s bomb threat is being investigated by Detective Reid Hall of the BPD. Hall is the resource officer on duty at the high school.
