WELL DONE: Police quickly find suspect who allegedly just robbed two young adult tourists… [ARREST VIDEO]
HYANNIS – The message early this morning was crystal clear; rob our guests visiting HyTown and it’s all hands on deck!
In Hyannis we are very grateful for the tourists who chose to visit our town out of all the other choices out there. Which is why the Barnstable Patrol force and Street Crimes Unit consistently go above and beyond to make our guests feel safe and secure.
Early this morning was no different.
According to early reports from sources, at about 1:10AM this morning, two young men from out of town (possibly underage), trusted a local man they had just met to sell them a couple of beers out of a backpack he was carrying. The young men thought nothing of letting the older stranger into their car, which is when the stranger grabbed money from one of their wallets and took off running. The young men chased the suspect from the parking lot behind the 19 Hole all the way down Ocean Street to the area of South Street. The two lost the suspect when he allegedly threatened them and entered a wooded area behind the Hess gas station.
The victims then flagged down an unmarked Barnstable Street Crime Unit (SCU) and began telling police what had just happened.
A Barnstable Police K-9 Unit was nearby and hit the ground tracking behind the Hess station, the last place the suspect had been seen.
A description of a white male, wearing a dark hoodie, and shaved head was given out to responding squad cars who took positions along the possible perimeter of where the suspect could still possibly be.
SCU Member and Barnstable Police Officer Scott Wright remained with the victims and assisted them by gathering details. At one point, Wright took the victims back to the scene of the crime, gathering more details and summoning a Barnstable County Sheriff crime scene investigator to the scene.
Meanwhile, Officer Sean Roycroft terminated the track and decided to patrol the area just beyond the initial perimeter. Officers rushed to the intersection of Pleasant Street and Main Street to provide backup when Roycroft radioed he had stopped a suspect fitting the earlier description put out by Officer Wright.
Officer Wright had the two victims sit in the back seat of his unmarked cruiser and transported them to scene where the suspect had been stopped. Officers had the suspect stand in front of Wright’s cruiser where they illuminated him, giving the victims a clear well lighted view.
It didn’t take long for the victims to identify the suspect as the man they say robbed them.
Brian Walls, age 42, of Barnstable, was arrested and transported back to BPD Headquarters, where he was charged with Unarmed Robbery and Intimidation of a Witness.
From start to finish, it took police about an hour to find and arrest their suspect… Which sends a strong message to local criminals that tourists and patrons of the Main Street area are not to be messed with.
