PRESS RELEASE
1/15/14
On Sunday 2/9/14, at approximately 1:45 PM, a man walking in the parking area of the Mini Food Mart on Main St. Hyannis was robbed at knifepoint and assaulted by two unknown assailants. The victim’s backpack was taken off his back as he lay on the ground and the two robbery suspects fled the area on foot in different directions.
Shortly thereafter, Detective Jason Laber began an investigation concerning the robbery. With the help of surveillance video from the Mini Food Mart, several members of the Barnstable Street Crimes Unit were able to identify the black male suspect as a 21 year old homeless male named Shondell Rateree. Det. Laber’s continued investigation revealed that the white male suspect was 24 year old named Curtis Maciel. Maciel is also a homeless male currently living in the area of Main St. Hyannis.
On Friday 2/14, Det Laber was able to Locate Curtis Maciel walking on Main St. Hyannis in front of the JFK Library and arrested him without incident. Later that same evening, Yarmouth Police Officer Ambrosini was conducting a traffic stop with the Barnstable Street Crimes Unit and spotted Rateree on Barnstable Rd. Rateree was also arrested walking near the scene of the original crime and he was transported to the Barnstable Police Dept.
Detective Laber then interviewed the suspects separately at the police station, and Maciel and Rateree both confessed to robbing the victim in the parking area of the Mini Food Mart on 2/9.
Curtis M. Maciel and Shondell Q. Rateree are both charged with Armed Robbery and Assault and Battery. They are both being held at the Barnstable Police Facility on $5000 bail, pending their arraignment in Barnstable District Court on Tuesday 2/18/14.
