CENTERVILLE – A 44-year-old Mashpee woman is still in the hospital, under arrest for drunk driving after crashing into a utility pole last evening.
Shortly before 11:00 p.m. – Friday, April 9th, 2021 – Barnstable Police squad cars responded, along with COMM FD units, to the area of 498 Main Street for reports of a single vehicle crash. The first officers on scene found a transformer-bearing utility pole completely snapped and leaning over the roadway. Police and firefighters had to be extra careful to stay clear of arcing live wires down on the pavement, according to information relayed from dispatch. The female driver was reportedly still inside the vehicle, according to radio transmission…
… the transformer had broken free and just missed smashing through the vehicle’s windshield. Witnesses in the area reported seeing a large flash from quite a distance away. Also, it appears as though the vehicle careened off a large tree before traveling about another 100 yards and striking the utility pole. The speed limit on that section of Main Street is 25 miles per hour…
The driver was safely inside the back of an ambulance when HN arrived minutes after first responders…
Main Street needed to be completely shut down while awaiting the arrival of Eversource crews, who would eventually shut down power to the area, making the scene safe.
The female driver was transported to Cape Cod Hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. While hospitalized, she was charged with OUI, Negligent Operation, and Marked Lane Violation. At the time of this report, a police officer was at CCH with the patient while she remained under arrest…
Homes in the vicinity were without power at the time of this report. Eversource repair crews are expected to be on scene throughout the overnight.
