HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS – [HN PHOTO NOTES & MULLINGS ON THE MATTER] – It was an extremely baffling scene as Barnstable Police patrol officers investigated reports of an injured woman showing up in the vicinity of the Wendy’s fast-food restaurant at around 2:00 a.m. this morning. Officers soon located a silver Chevy sedan in the CVS parking lot near the Airport Rotary. The injured woman had reportedly been behind the wheel, her face covered with a fresh sheet of blood. She was said to be incoherent, possibly very intoxicated. At the time of this report, officers were still trying to figure out what caused her injuries. The woman was eventually transported to Cape Cod Hospital by the Hyannis Fire Department.

Back at the Wendy’s parking lot, officers were busy trying to take a man into custody for allegedly being drunk and disorderly. He was also said to have been possibly in the company of the injured woman prior to police arriving.

The man appeared to be resisting arrest when HN arrived on scene. And there’s a common issue having to do with the backseats of modern police cruisers being divided by a wall in the middle. Uncooperative prisoners (as was the case this morning) often act up in the doorway to these divided backseats, quite often by kicking at the door and officers. Because the seats are now divided by a wall, it’s impossible for a second officer to go around and assist by safely pulling an unruly prisoner into the backseat. The divider limits officer access to an unreasonably small space just outside the cruiser door. Because of this flaw, I’ve seen officers kicked and situations become way more hazardous for everyone involved, including the prisoner. These threshold confrontations would be less likely if assisting officers had more access in order to get a combative prisoner safely under control. Early this morning, things escalated when the prisoner decided to resist being placed into the backseat. Officers had to deal with the prisoner’s kicking, and the cruiser door ended up being damaged.

A crime scene photographer from the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office arrived to document the woman’s wounds, along with damage to the cruiser’s door.

The silver Chevy sedan was towed from CVS and the entire [bleep] show remains under investigation. HN will provide official updates as they become available.
