Driver Flees After High-Speed Crash Leaves Wreckage Obstructing Route 28—Guardrail and Sign Destroyed [HN Photos]

WEST YARMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS — Shortly after 3 a.m. today, Yarmouth Police responded to Route 28 at Main Street, where a small Chevy sedan was found abandoned and heavily damaged in the middle of the roadway.
Witnesses reported seeing the occupants exit the wrecked vehicle and flee on foot westbound toward Hyannis, leaving behind extensive property damage.
The sedan apparently veered off the road and slammed into a guardrail and highway sign at high speed, uprooting and mangling the guardrail while damaging a large highway sign.
Barnstable Police assisted in searching for the likely injured occupants. With no K-9 unit available, officers deployed a drone to scan nearby parking lots and streets. A Barnstable County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit arrived to photograph the scene and dust for fingerprints.
The crash remains under active investigation by Yarmouth Police, with assistance from Barnstable Police and the Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit.
