HN Photo: Warmer weather comes with warmer weather woes…
HN Photo Notes: I was told I could expect to see more than the usual number of homeless individuals on the streets last evening. Apparently, when the temperature rises above freezing, some of the emergency overflow homeless shelters (basically local hotels) end up kicking the unfortunate to the curb. I’m told this is so certain programs can save money put aside for those nights when the homeless in Hyannis are endangered by deadly temps below freezing. Last evening, it was in the low 40s when HN snapped the above photo. At around 1:30 a.m., police and firefighters had been called to Main Street in front of the Barnstable Police Department substation for a report of an older man down on the sidewalk. I guess the 911 caller wasn’t very cooperative, and responders didn’t know what they really had until arriving on scene. Responders found a 68-year-old homeless man who had fallen onto the sidewalk and needed help. He had reportedly been drinking and may have been suffering from the effects of gravity and hard surfaces. He was eventually transported to Cape Cod Hospital. Poor fella. If only—for his sake—it had been a little colder out last evening!
