Driver takes out utility pole in Mashpee, flees into woods… police still searching…
MASHPEE – As you will see in the following HN Video, at about 12:30 a.m. this morning, a male driver reportedly crashed into a pole and was lying down in the middle of Route 28 prior to getting up and fleeing into the woods.
Route 28 in the area of Polaris Drive was completely closed down for a period of time as first responders worked to remove a snapped utility pole and support cable that were down across the roadway.
Prior to police arriving on scene, a second vehicle also crashed into the pole that was down across the roadway. The second vehicle had front end damage and the driver was not hurt.
Several Mashpee squad cars saturated the Polaris Drive neighborhood trying to find the driver who possibly may have been badly injured. A K-9 unit arrived and began tracking in the area. Just prior to 2:00 a.m., dispatch reported a cell phone ping placed the driver in the immediate area… a short time later the cellphone may have been shut off, thus disabling the ability to ping.
A Mashpee Rescue ambulance stood by for a period of time in case officers found the driver.
As of 3:00 a.m. — the time of this report — Mashpee patrol officers were still out searching the surrounding areas, very much concerned the driver may have been injured.
UPDATE – 4:20 am: Officers were still out searching the woods near the crash. A new ping told officers the phone was switched back on… and that the driver was still in the immediate area… [DEVELOPING]
