HYANNIS – A neighbor pulled out an extinguisher and fought a kitchen fire while firefighters were responding last evening. He very likely saved the building from further fire damage…
The first firefighters on scene reported a fire on the second floor while other engines raced to the scene.
A woman had been cooking when a grease fire grew out of control. Her next door neighbor came to her aid right as the entire apartment was filled with thick smoke and flames were climbing in a column above the stove.
The neighbor, Gregg Jennings, said he had learned how to use a fire extinguisher by watching TV and reading…
Jennings aimed the extinguisher and swept the fire at its base. His actions significantly slowed the flames from spreading. He told HN the extinguisher was just about running dry right as the first firefighters arrived.
The fire was quickly knocked down, but flames had spread to the kitchen cabinets and firefighters needed to tear into the wall to make sure it was completely extinguished.
When HN arrived, the woman who had been cooking was outside coughing from smoke inhalation. Jennings was also outside the apartment, sitting against a wall and still holding onto a fire extinguisher…
The woman was assisted by firefighters as she walked over to an ambulance to be evaluated. She was not transported to CCH.
The American Red Cross was on scene to assist displaced occupants find shelter until the apartment can be made liveable again.
