High-Speed Drunken Crash Rocks Low-Speed Centerville Neighborhood, Cops Say

CENTERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS — A quiet family neighborhood was rocked last night when a speeding Dodge Ram pickup truck slammed into a tree on Quisett Road near the Centerville-Hyannis village line.
Barnstable Police say 21-year-old Didar Shapenov of Marlboro was behind the wheel. He was taken to Cape Cod Hospital with minor injuries, where officers arrested him and charged him with operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and speeding.
Hyannis Firefighters responded to the scene to clean up fluids and tend to the driver. A sheriff’s crime scene unit later photographed the wrecked pickup truck and the injured tree.
Neighbors heard the loud crash and came outside during a light rain to investigate. Many were stunned by how fast the truck had been traveling through their normally low-speed residential area.
It remains unclear why Shapenov was driving at such a high rate of speed in the quiet neighborhood.
