HN Notes from the overnight… special, when things are so “Hytown” it hurts edition…
HN PHOTO: In classic “Hytown” style, a random young passenger, obviously no longer allowed to smoke inside the vehicle, but also considerate about not letting too much valuable air-conditioned air escape (especially with today’s gas prices), dangles a half-finished smoke at the ready for that next intense Hytown drama that’s bound to happen sooner or later, especially when aimlessly “just drivin’ around…” (and also notice the hanging cinnamon/apple scented Little Trees car freshener that screams that the “no smoking in my car!” battle has been a “thing” for quite some time…). And as I’ve always said, it’s just not one little thing that makes us who we are, but rather an avalanche of little things combined that makes Hyannis so “Hytown” it actually hurts. These certain things… certain identifiers… single us out as definitely not being a tourist, or some depraved weirdo from Oyster Harbors, or certain other gated communities in Sandwich, for example.
But I digress…
HYANNIS – [HN NOTES & MULLINGS ON THE MATTER] – Other than the normal annoyances, like drunks acting up, fistfights, crashes, or disputes between couples and neighboring tenants, there really wasn’t anything I’d describe as particularly unusual last evening. But the following are just some examples from last evening of what I’d consider to be “normal” calls for a Saturday evening in Hyannis.
Right from the get-go, officers made damn sure the gate to Hathaway’s Pond was closed and secured for the duration…. (for obvious reasons, please refer to previous HN reports… CLICK HERE FOR ONE EXAMPLE)
Early in the evening, officers responded to check on the wellbeing of a female wearing black yoga pants and a leopard skin shirt (as if that wasn’t enough), apparently behaving like she was on drugs… no word on how that all panned out… but I’m assuming she didn’t need rescue… (or additional fashion advice.)
And there was a disturbance in the East End of Main Street where a man was reportedly brandishing a hammer… the first patrolman on scene detained the hammer guy who was eventually charged with Assault with a Dangerous Weapon, Intimidation, and trafficking drugs (a “class A” substance), according to radio transmissions. HN will provide official updates if and when they become available…
There were at least two separate hit-and-run accidents reported in the vicinity of South Street and Ocean Street last evening.
And what could be a standing headline in recent months, officers responded to the Fogo Brazilian BBQ, at 39 Iyannough Rd., for a random male wearing a white shirt wanting to fight with restaurant staff. It has been HN’s experience that Fogo disturbances tend to deescalate and work themselves out prior to cops arriving on scene. In last night’s disturbance a male was taken into custody for A&B P.O., Protective Custody, Disorderly, and Resisting Arrest, according to radio traffic.
There was a car vs. motorcycle crash at South Street and High School Road… both vehicles needed to be towed from the scene… the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening as indicated by the fact there was no call for a police accident reconstruction unit.
Officers responded to an address near the water in the Breakwater Shores neighborhood of Hyannis for a missing 9-year-old child. Officers were considering launching a drone to search over the water, when one of the officers reported that the little darlin’ had been located safe and sound.
Somebody maliciously pulled a fire alarm at a downtown Hyannis nightclub. And cops were investigating… unknown if they ultimately caught the idiot or not… (On a side note, maliciously pulling fire alarms has seemingly been back in vogue lately… something we all need like a big fat sucking chest wound!)
There was a missing elderly man with Alzheimers in Centerville who was eventually tracked down and located unharmed.
There were the normal mental health emergencies, in one case someone screaming and yelling at residential staff…
And – *sigh* – there was the usual nightly report of the (likely intoxicated) random male on a bicycle wearing a gray t-shirt, black backpack, with long hair, riding up and down Main Street harassing visitors and patrons by shouting colorful obscenities.
There was also a serious single vehicle crash in Marstons Mills:
Driver seriously hurt after striking utility pole in Marstons Mills…
MARSTONS MILLS – The first police and firefighters on scene found a damaged pickup truck which had struck a utility pole in the area of 230 School Street, earlier this evening, around 9pm.
A patrolman initially radioed that the driver would likely need to be Medflighted from an off-Cape location… but as the situation unfolded, firefighters opted to rush the patient to Cape Cod Hospital in a C-O-MM Fd ambulance.
HN just spoke with a C-O-MM Fd official who is working on a media statement. HN will provide official updates as they become available.
OFFICIAL UPDATE 7/31/22 @ 1:30AM: According to Captain Tom Goodearl of the Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Fire Department, the first firefighters on scene of the single-vehicle crash found a heavily damaged pickup truck which had rolled over after striking a utility pole. The impact to the utility pole caused a power outage in the area. The driver (who was the sole occupant) was transported in a C-O-MM FD ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital with injuries described as “serious.”
HN NOTE: Sorry for the lack of HN photos and video, but I just wasn’t “feeling it” last evening… thought I had perhaps come down with a little case of the “’rona,” but according to the lab results, it simply turned out to be a rather acute ice-cold beer deficiency which was successfully treated with multiple Modelos, intensive couch rest, and a marathon of mindless documentaries about murders and serial killers. Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers… and I’ll hopefully pull through and be back out on the streets ASAP!
In the meantime, have a very safe and splendiferous Hytown Sunday! And thank you for reading Hyannis News!
