HN PHOTOS: KOHL’S TRUCK TAKES DOWN POLES & POWER LINES ON PHINNEY’S LANE

CENTERVILLE – [HN NOTES & MULLINGS ON THE MATTER] – A frazzled senior – now suddenly without electricity – blustered across his front lawn, saying he wanted to hurt someone. He was at his wit’s end. For weeks, the ground-shaking heavy equipment in front of his home has been tearing up the roadway, seemingly over and over! – at least three times, according to one neighbor.
The area is a huge construction mess, and it doesn’t look like Phinney’s Lane will be back to normal any time soon. One needs to holler in order to have any type of conversation, including a friendly one. Neighbors, exhausted by the relentless noise, were now standing next to one another in the street, wondering what suddenly happened to their power! Also wondering what was going to happen next! These were battled-hardened neighbors along Phinney’s Lane, fed up with the weeks of ongoing commotion… now simply commiserating with one another, peacefully, apart from the random homicidal threat, likely not made in earnest. One could tell these were ordinarily hard working, civilized folks, not prone to violence. But everyone has their breaking point.
One person said it was a Kohl’s delivery truck that struck a pole and ripped the power service completely out of the side of his home, damaging the wiring and who knows what else. He was nursing a bottle of Miller High Life, the beer probably took the edge off, and was surely one of the better things that had happened to him since returning home for the evening.
Teenage children were outside their homes, putting their remaining moments of cellphone battery life to good use. Friends needed to be notified of the latest catastrophe on Phinney’s. “It was a Kohl’s truck” could be heard up and down the long street, as tired neighbors returned home to no electricity. It hadn’t quite yet reached the verge of civil unrest, and except for the senior alluding to wanting to shoot someone, everyone appeared to be unarmed.
The crash into the utility poles and power lines on Phinney’s Lane happened around 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Huckins Neck Road. Phinney’s Lane was already closed down for the most part due to the ongoing construction. The Barnstable Police paged out for detail officers who would likely need to be on scene for at least 8 hours. There were no injuries reported.
